Skin Ageing

Skin is evidence that change is a part of life. Your lifestyle, nutrition, genetics, and personal habits are just a few of the variables that affect how quickly your skin ages.
Lets have a closer look at the factors that contribute to skin ageing and what you can and cannot do to slow down the ageing process of your skin.

Physical symptoms of ageing skin

As we get older, skin visibly changes in a number of ways, and a lot of it has to do with circumstances beyond your control.

These changes are:

  • Itchy, rough skin.
  • Loss of elasticity. Your skin becomes slack and hangs loosely as you age due to the loss of the elastic tissue (elastin and collagen) in the skin.
  • Transparent. The epidermis (skin’s outer layer) and dermis are thinning, which is the root cause of this (deeper layer of the skin).
  • Fragile. Flattening of the junction between the epidermis and dermis (the layer of skin beneath the epidermis) results in increased skin fragility.
  • More prone to bruises. Thicker blood vessel walls are the reason for this.
  • More prone to skin lesions like benign (non-cancerous) tumours.

What happens under the skin as we age?

The skin on your body doesn’t change solely there, though. Your face’s look might also change as your skin ages.

  • Loss of fat in the subcutaneous layer, which dermatologists refer to as the subcutaneous layer, in the cheeks, temples, chin, nose, and eye regions. Sunken eyes, loosening skin, and a “skeletal” appearance could occur from this.
  • Skin around the mouth may become loose and pucker beyond the age of 50 as a result of bone loss.
  • Nasal cartilage loss makes the nose’s bone components more visible and causes the nasal tip to droop.

What elements affect your skin and why?

There are a lot of factors that contribute to skin ageing as we age.

  • Sun damage. The skin’s elastin fibres suffer damage over time as a result of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Additionally, the skin is more prone to bruising, rips, and slow healing.
  • Sun damage unfortunately only manifests itself later in life. Even though the skin can occasionally heal itself, nothing can totally reverse solar damage. It’s never too late to start using sunscreen. Using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher can help to protect your skin when you do venture outside. Even more of a difference is made by reapplying sunscreen every two hours, even more often if you get wet or perspire a lot.
  • Gravity. Gravity causes drooping of the eyebrows and eyelids, looseness and fullness under the cheeks and jaw (jowls and “double chin”), and lengthening of the ear lobes when the skin loses its elasticity.
  • Obesity. Being overweight weakens the hair and nails and causes the skin to expand. It also contributes to the development of stretch marks, varicose veins, skin tags, and dark patches on the skin called acanthosis nigricans.
  • Daily face expressions. Laugh lines are, in a sense, real. Lines on the face become more noticeable after the skin begins to lose its suppleness, which often happens as people reach their 30s and 40s. The forehead may have horizontal lines, the skin over the top of the nose may have vertical lines (commonly referred to as 11 lines), or there may be small, curving lines on the temples, upper cheekbones, and around the mouth.
  • Position for sleeping. Sleeping habits might also be important. The centre of the cheekbones and the side of the forehead between the brows and the hairline are frequently affected by sleep wrinkles. These are caused by how the head is resting on the pillow and may become more obvious when the skin begins to lose its flexibility. Altering how you sleep could make these creases less noticeable or stop them from getting worse.
  • Smoking. Compared to non-smokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun exposure, smokers typically have more wrinkles. It’s unclear why this disparity exists. It can be because smoking impairs the skin’s normal blood flow.
  • Itchy and dry skin Dry skin is typical as people age. Due to the dry indoor air caused by hot buildings, “winter itch” affects about 85% of older adults. Aging may also aggravate dry skin due to the decrease of sweat and oil glands.

How can we help?

If you’ve found that youthful glow and bounce of your skin lessening with age fear not, it’s a common occurrence. As we get older, the amount of collagen in our skin falls and the quality of collagen we have deteriorates, which results in thinner, duller, lined complexion with larger pores.

Dermapen Microneedling
Medical micro-needling is the ultimate treatment for non-surgical and non ablative treatment of various skin conditions such as aging (wrinkles, stretching), scarring (acne, surgical), skin tightening (firming) and hyperpigmentation, skin rejuvenation.

Microneedle RF Stamp
The gold radio frequency microcrystal pins create tiny injuries to the skin, stimulating a natural healing response which triggers the production of new collagen and elastin fibres that tighten and smooth the skin, resulting in a healthier tone and texture to the skin with reduced fine lines and wrinkles.
This treatment has been clinically-proven to deliver fractional radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis, which further enhances skin tightening to treat double chin and jowls in addition to scar reduction.

ResurFX
Skin resurfacing procedures use lasers to reduce the signs of aging and improve skin texture, laxity and tone. They are also used for scars and stretch mark reduction as well as for treatment of a variety of other cosmetic concerns. Non-ablative resurfacing keeps the skin intact, stimulates collagen growth and tightens the underlying skin. It is ideal for patients who prefer a milder treatment approach with less downtime and no risk of skin infection. Therefore your skin becomes rejuvenated; firmer, smoother and reducing lines and wrinkles as well treating scarring including acne and stretch marks.
