young woman with beautiful face and soft skin

Dermaplaning is a precise, elegant and highly effective superficial exfoliation. “Planing” as it is commonly referred to, relies on the simplest of tools but the most artful of skill to deeply scrape and exfoliate away the top layers of inert skin. This low tech treatment yields the highest dividends in skin toning, clarifying and re-texturizing and is ideally suited for all ages and skin types. Dermaplaning also removes hair from the treated areas leaving behind a smooth, beautiful face free from embarrassing and unwanted hair. Dermaplaning does not remove the root of facial hair, but instead removes the hair that sits above the epidermis. Dermaplaning designed to work effectively with the vellous hairs found on your face and prevents hair from appearing thicker or darker as it grows back in.

Dermaplaning can remove up to 2 to 3 weeks worth of rough, dead skin and build up can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks. Dermaplaning uses a specifically developed type blade, known as a dermatone blade. This blade has a rotating head and is oftentimes compared to an electric razor as it relies on this continual, fast movement to safely remove layers of dead skin. This blade is held at a 45 degree angle to the skin while your dermatologist gently moves the blade along the surface of your face and manipulates the skin with their hands. Depending upon the severity and depth at which dead and unwanted skin sits on the face the length of your treatment may range from several minutes to an hour. Deeper lines, and more severe build up of dead skin require more layers of skin to be removed.

Dermaplaning can be performed on small, precise areas of the skin or can be applied to larger regions, including the entire face. Dermaplaning can also be performed in addition to other skin treatments, such as chemical peels or cortisone injections. This treatment also encourages the growth of new, healthy skin cells and can have a positive impact on the skin cell lifecycle. Dermaplaning is a highly effective way to resurface the skin and is a highly effective method for leveling out uneven surfaces on the face. Dermaplaning is gentle and does not break the capillaries on the face, which more agressive exfoliators may do. This prevents skin discoloration or scarring. Since dermaplaning does not involve the application of chemicals it is a great alternative for individuals who have sensitive skin and cannot undergo chemical peels or other chemically based treatments. Dermaplaning is a non-surgical procedure and requires no recovery time nor does it produce any visible side effects. Our clients are always delighted at the feel of their skin after being dermaplaned and can hardly believe how even and youthful they appear. The saying “No pain, no gain” does not apply to this highly effective exfoliating technique!

Dermaplanning with Skin Peels

Dermaplaning your skin enhances the results of the chemical peel, allowing the chemicals to penetrate deeper into the skin. Chemical peels are great for improving your skin’s tone and texture, discolorations, fine lines and for giving you a brighter, more radiant appearance with minimal downtime.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a highly effective method of exfoliation. Considered a medical-grade exfoliation, Dermaplaning is carried out using a small scalpel for the controlled removal of the outermost layer of skin. The scalpel is expertly passed over the skin, removing dead skin cells and vellus hair.

Is it painful?

No. There is no numbing required before Dermaplaning. The treatment has often been described as relaxing.
Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive treatment with little to no downtime. Your skin will look immediately radiant after treatment allowing you to return to your day-to-day routine.

Is it safe?

Dermaplaning is an extremely safe treatment when carried out by an experienced and certified Cosmetic Therapist.

Is there any downtime?

Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive treatment with little to no downtime. Your skin will look immediately radiant after treatment allowing you to return to your day-to-day routine.

Is Dermaplaning suitable for everyone?

Dermaplaning is suitable for all skin types, ages 18+ and also suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  Dermaplaning is unsuitable if you have active acne, nickel allergies or on medications Warfarin or Isotretinoin (Roaccutane)

How often is Treatment recommended?

Dermaplaning for some can be considered a ‘one off’ treatment perhaps in preparation for a special occasion. For those who want to maintain healthier brighter skin we recommend 1 treatment every 4 weeks. If facial hair is a concern, we recommend treatment every 6-8 weeks.

What will my skin look like after a Dermaplaning Treatment?

Immediately after a Dermaplaning Facial your skin will appear slightly pink and flushed. This erythema of the skin will subside within 1-2 hours.
Your Dermaplaning Treatment can be followed with a 20 min LED Light application which will reduce the erythema immediately.

Will there be any change to my Facial hair regrowth?

No. The structure of hair will not change. The hair producing follicle is located in the dermis,(under the top layer of skin) actions to the hair above skin level will have no impact in the follicle itself.
Hair will return as normal at the same growth rate, colour and texture as before, normally 8 weeks after treatment.

Can I wear makeup after treatment?

Because Dermaplaning increases the skins ability to absorb products it is recommended to avoid heavier makeups which may irritate the skin and clog the pores which can lead to an acne break out. Make up can be applied the next day without causing any irritation or unwanted congestion. (A mineral make up can be applied straight after treatment)

How long does the treatment take?

You should allow 1 hour for a Dermaplaning Treatment. This allows time to have a consultation before treatment begins where a medical intake and consent form will be filled out and we can discuss any questions you may have.

Are there any risks or side effects?

The possibility of a nick or cut may occur, this is unlikely as every precaution and care is taken to avoid this. In some cases patients may experience redness, irritation, blemishes, dryness, acne breakout and/or cold sores. These side effects are very rare and usually subside in a day or two.
